it means, "to be existing". In English, we would just say, "God exists."

In English it means "God is an existing being." - lorenzo9, Oct 21, 2010

ser existente is a redundancy. Juan es = Juan existe

maybe you want to say that God is a living being. (un ser viviente)

I know it's been touched upon already but I would go with "God exists" as well because to say that "God is an existing being" is not as common in English. You would probably say, "God is a being that exists". smile Hope this helps.

I agree that "God exists" is how it would be said, but I was pointing out the the translation of ser was incorrect and "to be existing" is wrong. - lorenzo9, Oct 21, 2010
Well, that's not to say that ".. es un ser existente" is any more common in Spanish. To me, it sounds just as weird that "is an existing being". - bill1111, Oct 21, 2010
I know how it would be literally translated, but it is not something that we would say literally translated. Sometimes you have to translate thought for thought rather than word for word. - Echoline, Oct 21, 2010
Yes, but in the phrase "es un ser", ser is a noun and not a verb, no matter how weird it sounds. - lorenzo9, Oct 21, 2010
