Familia Son o Es

I was working on an exercise on line and I came across a sentence I am having problems with. Which one of the three sentences is correct? "La familia de Thomas son argentinos" o "La familia de Thomas es argentinos" o "La familia de Thomas es argentino."
While there are many people in the Thomas family, the subject "familia is singular so I should use "es argentino." I think the 3rd choice is correct, but it just doesn't sound right to me. Can you please help me understand the reasoning? Thank you!

La familia de Thomas es argentina.
Family there is only one, and it is femenine, so its adjective (argentina) has to agree with it, in gender and number.
