While having a conversation

I am trying to translate a sentence

"While having a conversation you may want to use phrases to continue the topic talked about,come back to the topic or even correct your partner."

Not sure what would be best for "having" here..

Mientras se mantiene una conversación ....or, in this context:

Durante una conversación ... puedes querer usar frases para continuar con el tema del que se está hablando, volver a un tema en cuestión, o incluso para corregir a tu interlocutor.

I would translate "to have a conversation" as "hablar", so "Mientras se hablan. . ."

Can it be"..el tema de lo que se está hablando..."?

tema is maculine, so it should be el que and not lo que. . .after de that becomes del que - lorenzo9, Oct 20, 2010

Will it be "con" or "...puedes querer usar frases para continuar la tema del que se está hablando.."

Also "..topic talked about..." is translated as "...tema del que se está hablando.." Can you please help me understand the grammar behind this?
