Hi cogumela

The word kind cannot be used here as an orange is definitely a fruit. The word kind implies that it is something like a fruit. As kevin says, type is the word to use.

I think what she said was acceptable. If she said "kind of A fruit" it would mean "in some way" it is a fruit but she said "a kind of fruit" and that makes sense. "Type" seems like the closest translation though.... - benweck, Oct 19, 2010

I use "a kind of" and "a type of" interchangeably, not to be confused with "kind of", meaning "sort of". - KevinB, Oct 20, 2010

Type--it even looks and sounds sort of like the English word, so that helps....
