Hi, marlon!

Both are correct. They are two diferent past tenses in Spanish, perfectly valids. Depending of the context you can use one, or the other.

Había mucha gente (with tilde)

Hubo mucha gente

Imperfect vs perfect is a very common doubt, you can find a basic explanaition in this link:

If after reading this you still have doubts, please ask again giving some context and we will try to help you.

It depends a lot on context, it's best to think of the difference between the preterite (hubo) and the imperfect (había) to describe things in the past and that will help you use either one to best get your point across.

The preterite (hubo) is for single events in the past or something that was there all at once or not for long. An event or happening.

Anoche hubo un incendio en el edificio. Last night there was a fire in the building.

The imperfect (in the case of había) gives a general description in the past -

En mi jardín había muchas flores. In my garden there were a lot of flowers.

Había veinte personas en el coche. There were 20 people in the car

Just a description not an event. Había implies continuity.

I hope those points help you smile
