This is the context under which this term appears: The three sections of the small intestine produce digestive enzymes and contribute to the "breakdown" and absorption of food. Thanks in advance!

"descomposición" is usually said about decomposing food, but not in this case it seems. Apparently the word that fits this context is degradar: ".. producen enzimas digestivas y contribuyen a la degradación y la absorción de los alimentos."
(by the way, "enzima" in this context does have a "zi")
