¿Pero o sino?

¿Pero o sino?

¿Es correcta esta oración?

"Las protagonistas no son asesinadas ni violadas, pero ellas sufren mucho de un tipo de violencia más sutil."

No sé si debo usar "pero" o "sino," y no sé si "violencia más sutil" tiene sentido en español (voy a hablar de la violencia de condiciones de trabajo que destruyen las familias de los personajes).

¡Gracias por la ayuda!

Both pero and sino are coordinating conjunctions (connecting two words or phrases of similar grammatical status) meaning "but." As such, both pero and sino can be used to contrast two words, sentences or phrases.

Anyway

-But: used in contrasting an affirmative idea with a negative. No es blanco -> sino negro, it is not white, but black

-Except, besides (salvo). Nadie lo sabe sino Juan -> nobody knows it except John

-Solely, only: always proceded by a negative proposition. No sino -> not only so

¡Muchas gracias! That helps a lot - I wasn't sure how to use sino with phrases instead of single words, and that clarifies things!

In this situation you are right to use pero because although the part of the sentence before the conjunction is negative, the part after doesn't directly contradict it. Also, use sino que when you would use sino when there is a conjugated verb after the conjunction.
