Could someone please tell me how to ask the question -
Were there many people there? (at the party)
using the preterite.
Does this work -
¿Estuvo un gran cantidad de gente allí?

Hubo mucha gente. Haber is to be, but could also be used for there was, or there were, so there were a lot of people (the other stuff you have is just fluff-- not good for getting your point across and answering a question).
