Shade by your own will is my best guess. But it's actually closer to the will of the shade, but that makes no sense to me (not shade as in shadow, shade as in to color in).

a tint of will, a sense of will, maybe related to some linguistic description explaining that some verbs reflect a sense of volition, but are not openly perceived as volitive actions. Especially related to modal verbs.
