To Blossom

How does one say "To Blossom"? It seems there are many close translations but none seem to satisfy me. Florecerán is a close one.

Thanks!

As far as tense goes, I think "are to blossom" can really mean several things...

are set (ready) to blossom = están preparadas para florecer (not sure of this translation)

are supposed to blossom = se espera que florecerán

For the second, you'd have to reword the sentence a bit in Spanish...

Se espera que las naciones de centro y sudamérica florecerán.

And, I don't know how these sentences sound to the Spanish ear.

However, I can make some meaningful comments on the English phrase. Blossom, when used in reference to nations, has a somewhat poetic or prophetic sense to it. When used in the phrase "are to blossom," it does, in fact, sound as though you expect that a prophecy of some sort is about to come to pass.

If you mean that government officials and news reporters and the like are expecting the economies to rebound soon, you might say things like...

Experts are predicting / expecting that the economies of the nations of South and Central America will soon rebound / start flourishing.

Or, even more general...

They say the Central and South American economies will start flourishing soon.

Dicen que las economías de centroamérica y de sudamérica empezarán a florecer pronto.

Please don't accept any of my Spanish in this post as correct.

The infinitive is "Florecer"... The right tense depends on what you want to say...

Florecerán means... They will blossom

It depends on the context, as always. It's not the same to talk about blossoming flowers (las flores florecen) for example, than to talk about a blossoming economy (la economía está repuntando). If you don't provide any context, we can only guess what you want.

A decir verdad se puede utilizar el verbo "Florecer" para indicar esa misma frase, por ejemplo: La economía de los países latinoamericanos está floreciendo. Quizá depende de la región en la que te encuentres. - Tonyriva, Oct 18, 2010
En ese caso sí, pero a priori es difícil saber si va a encajar bien. Por eso es siempre recomendable tener un contexto. - bill1111, Oct 18, 2010

Yes, you are right it is prophetic. I used the google translator and posted the text online but I am having to go through it again to make sure it is correct: I just wish I could learn to speak Spanish overnight! See the following URL:

Thanks for your time and assistance.

The context is:

Nations of South and Central America are to blossom (Las Naciones de Centro y SudAmerica están a Florecer).

Is this the closest word for

ARE TO BLOSSOM (i.e. están a Florecer)?

Thanks!

are to blossom...I'm not sure what tense that corresponds to in Spanish...simple future might work (florecerán), but I'm not 100% sure. - webdunce, Oct 20, 2010

The Bible, in several Spanish versions, uses florecer in Isaiah 27:6...

Isaiah 27:6 (King James Version)

6He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.

.

Isaías 27:6 (Reina-Valera Antigua)

6Días vendrán cuando Jacob echará raíces, florecerá y echará renuevos Israel, y la haz del mundo se henchirá de fruto.
