By learning Spanish, it enables you to go out and explore Spanish-speaking countries. A prospect I find truly amazing! The thrill of being able to communicate with people in a foreign language, experiencing new cultures and meeting new and interesting people, these are what makes learning a language so gratifying and worthwhile.
In answer to your 1st question, just learning the language is not enough. You need to travel to these places to really learn about these cultures. Sure, you could read about them in a textbook but to really understand you need to get out there and experience them! Learning the language is just a helpful starter that opens doors of the discovery ![]()
I would say no to the second question. Spanish is the world's second most natively spoken language and is a very influential language. It is a common misconception to believe that just learning English is enough. I mean no offence when I say, many people in Anglophone countries expect people in other countries to speak English and so don't bother learning another language, but this attitude is not sustainable as the majority of our trade and business dealing are with international companies. Learning a foreign language is more important now than it's ever been because of our increased ability to travel and because of our trade and international relationships.
Sorry my answer is a bit wordy but I have had to think all of this for my University application. I hope it helps ![]()

Language and culture go hand in hand. It is theoretically possible to understand a culture without knowing the language (although not fully), but it is almost impossible to speak naturally without understanding the culture.
To answer your question, it is easier to sit inside and experience the world through your computer.
