When is tengo que used and what does it mean

Tengo que trabajar or Teno trabajar

I have seen both examples but no sure why or when to use que after Tengo

Tengo trabajo ............. I have work

Yes. You have to say tengo que trabajar. Tengo trabajar would just be confusing. - KevinB, Oct 17, 2010

Welcome to the forum. Tener que is a phrase that means "to have to". Tengo que trabajar = I have to work. Tener by itself usually means to have. Tengo trabajo = I have work.
