How fast a person learns a foreign language depends totally on the person. Age and dedication are super important. The younger you are the better. It's alot like dancing, some people can do it and others can't. I've spent most of my professional life working with Spanish speakers and still wouldn't say that my Spanish is great. I know enough Spanish to know how much I don't know. Spanish is packed with quirky idioms and expressions that I'll never learn. However, I can say the basic things in the easiest way possible. I try to keep it simple, to take the path of least resistance, using the fewest words possible. I am around people that correct me which is great and the people around me were all educated at the university level in Spanish, several with grad degrees in Literature, Generally speaking I'm not a real verbal person even in English. I have kind of a math brain, so that's a hindrance. So the average person is probably better than me. However I can communicate and that has opened up a whole new window into a different world that is the hispanic world. So keep at it, it's worth it!
