Which should I use for this sentence (por o para)?

I'm trying to say "We went out (dated) for two years." Salimos por dos años o Salimos para dos años

However, I'm not quite sure whether to use por or para in the sentence. I thought it would be para, but according to the translator on this site it should be por.

I looked in the reference section on this site under Por y Para. I think I found my answer (it should be por). Can someone confirm this for me? - debdelafuente, Oct 14, 2010

Yes, it's por. Por is used for time, manner or means, etc. Para is used with infinitives, people, etc. However, "Hace dos años que salimos juntos" is also correct. In fact, I would probably use that instead.

I would go for:

Hace dos años que salimos juntos
