fortitude? fortaleza?

I have heard the word "fortalecimiento" which means "strengthening" used when the speaker was trying to say "fortitude" which is "fortaleza". This is a native Spanish speaker, so I am wondering if "fortalecimiento" can also be used for "fortitude". According to RAE the answer is it is an incorrect use of the word. But I am wondering if it could still be used this way. I know it's a rare word to use, but maybe somebody knows. Thanks!

Maybe in some parts of latin america, I don't know.. To me, "fortaleza" and "fortalecimiento" are two very different words, and even though you could replace one with the other in many sentences and they would still make sense, their meaning are too clear to mix them up.
