In Mexican Spanish it can mean monkey, but in Venezuelan Spanish it means "rags". Chango comes up in the dictionary, but changito doesn't. Does anyone have an idea as to why?

I think that would be like listing all the plural forms of nouns. - nizhoni1, Oct 13, 2010
I never heard "changos" used for rags! Where in Venezuela did you hear that? - Gekkosan, Oct 13, 2010

Chango is definitely a word for monkey. And yes, Changuito* would be the diminutive form of it.

I'm guessing there's some regional gap here. My wife is from Mexico City and says that word quite readily if we're at the zoo... Maybe it's not known everywhere?

I've not heard of it before - my family live in Peru so that's the kind of Spanish we speak. I love that we can find out about regional variations here! And I like the word "changuito" - it sounds like the right word for a cheeky little monkey :) - amy_moreno, Oct 12, 2010
You are right chango is the word for monkey in Mexico. I've never heard a Mexican call them monos. - gabacholoco, Oct 13, 2010
Mexicans use "monos" for something else. - Gekkosan, Oct 13, 2010

Changito is the brand name for the cartoon monkey below!

Changuito: alt text

Chango also appears to have some other meanings.

  1. changar - romper - to break (so chango would be I break)
  2. chango - muchacho - guy
  3. chango - torpe y fastidioso - clumsy and annoying
  4. chango - bromista - a funny person
  5. chango - joven que presta servicios en la casa - a young person who works "in service" (ie: a maid, etc) (Argentina)

    1. changuito - carrito de mano con ruedas - a small hand-pushed cart (Argentina)

Do any of these make sense with the context?

I used different sources for this, including online dictionaries for Spanish modernisms and slang: http://que-significa.com.ar/significado.php?termino=changuito http://que-significa.com.ar/significado.php?termino=chango

I just Googled "Que significa chango?" and found several threads saying that it is, indeed, monkey.

Hmmm, makes you wonder what's really in those chimichangas at the Mexican restaurant. Doesn't it?

Could you give us the sentence or use that you are having trouble with? We may be able to help figure it out?

I don't believe that is a word. I have never heard of it, and it isn't in the dictionary or any of the translators.
