My suggestion, "it makes me blue," is a bit old-fashioned and possibly American only. A more modern, youthful Americanism would be "it bums me out." This has a little more of a sense of making me depressed. "It bums me out every time I hear that song." A person could say, "I'm bummed out that my mother died" but it would come across as self-centered to say, "It bums me out that your mother died." On the other hand, you could say, "It's a real bummer that your mother died" without sounding insincere or crass (unless you gave it the wrong tone). Hope that helps.
How about "It makes me sad", "it saddens me" then further "It breaks my heart" "It's heartbreaking".
"It makes me blue" might work, or "it gives me the blues."
"It makes me sad that..."
