Hello, and welcome to the forum. People often say that, but it's really not true. Being dead is about as permanent as it gets, but we say está muerto. Here's a link to an article explaining when ser and estar are each appropriate.

Hi!

No, "ser" is not for permanent states. Get rid of that silly rule before it hurts you! You can say "I'm 17 years old" with "ser" just a few milliseconds before becoming 18 years old (not exactly permanent), plus you can use "ser" for meetings and events that last only minutes. On the other hand, you can use "estar" with things that last milliseconds, minutes, hours, days, years, or forever. On the other hand, in sentences like "Soy consciente de lo que ocurre", "ser" is completely temporary.

The permanent / temporary rule for ser / estar is the worst lie ever invented.
