If I wanted to say, "for his people", would I say por su pueblo or por su gente?

Is this an area thing? Maybe Mexico is pueblo and South America is gente?

For me, it sounds more natural to say "Por el pueblo," or "Por su patria."

And as mediterrunio has mentioned "su gente" would normally be used for a group of people close to you or family.

it´s the same thing if by su gente you mean general population. because sometimes su gente means only his family
