how often do you study spanish

For the past 2 months I study about 2-4 hours a day.how long do you think it will take me to obtain a basic understanding of spanish?

I would say that in 6 months you should have a basic understanding of the language at the rate you are going. Try to find ways to immerse yourself in it. It is good you are learning and studying, but you will never truly understand a language using a book. Listen to a Spanish radio station, watch movies in Spanish, go to your local Mexican restaurant, travel!

5 or 6 times a week, for one hour, via the interent, for 20 months with a couple of slow months and if I listen to television I may pick out one word in a sentence.

I could not possibly have a conversation with someone.

I can't read Spanish news on the interenet without much use of the dictionary.

People can come and live where I live, don't speak a word of English and in 6 months they are pretty will fluent. Fluent enough to live and work anyway.

Without immersion it would seem to be a losing battle for me
