I see in the dictionary that nacimiento means birthplace. I have seen lugar associated with being born. But how do you put it all together to make the statement like I phrased it in the question?

You got it a bit wrong. "Nacimiento" means birth, and "lugar" means place, which makes "Lugar de nacimiento" birthplace. However to say "I was born in (a place) on (a date)", you don't say "lugar de nacimiento", simply "Nací en (lugar) el día (date)" ie: "Nací en Madrid el 10 de agosto de 1980".

"Lugar de nacimiento" is used in different contexts: normally when you list data about a person, as in a database, or in a encyclopedia.

Welcome to the forum. We're a learning site, so we encourage people to try for themselves, first. The dictionary here is quite good, and the automatic translator will give you a reasonable start. If you post the results, we'd love to go over them.

The verb "to be born" is nacer. If you check it in the dictionary it will give you the conjugations for it. lugar is also in the dictionary. It just means "place".

You can just take the sentence: I was born in California and run it through the translator. It will get you close. Same thing with I was born in 1980.
