¿Fierro y hierro son la misma cosa?
One of my students from Mexico says "fierro" for "iron". Another from El Salvador says "hierro". Do both words mean the same thing? Can they both also mean "brand" as in the identifying mark put on cattle?

Yes, fierro and hierro mean the same thing...iron. I'm sure they both come from the same Latin word, where we also get the symbol for Iron, Fe.
I have heard hierro being used for a brand on a horse or cow. You'll have to look up fierro for this use...
