I have always learned that to say your profession in spanish you say

Soy _________ and you put the profession in the blank space

example recepcionista

Now I have just read something and saw

Estoy de recepcionista

I know it is correct but I would like to know if you can do this for every job, or does this have a different translation to

I am a receptionist

The entire sentence was

Está de receptionista en esa hotel

Yes, rather than your profession, "estoy de.. " is used to describe your current job, particularly one that didn't require a lot of personal background and/or qualification. In other words, you'd never say "estoy de médico en el hospital universitario" or "estoy de abogado en una gran empresa".

Estar de is something you are doing that is temporary rather than your profession, like housework or a job while you are a student.
