Mapa del mundo (jaleo)

Mapa del mundo (jaleo)

I was searching for a map of the world to study Spanish place names, and ran across this (not exactly what I was looking for). It may not be totally appropriate to post this as it is not the most politically correct map I have ever seen, but I do not know how elsewise to give the context for my question. I think I get everything else on the map but the usage of jaleo to refer to Indonesia. I am guessing this is being use to imply the country is a disorganized mess, but since that I would have picked Somalia for that interpretation, I wanted to see if I was missing something. I do note they plastered "selva" across parts of Argentina that clearly are not.

This is all great fun, but it seems like your specific question has not been answered yet.

Plainly said, "jaleo" means "trouble", a "row", a troublesome mess.

alt text Stadt:

Perhaps you noticed that in the lower left corner of the map, it states "El mundo según EEUU". I think it can be presumed from this that this is the most up to date map held by the American CIA who also brought us the non-existent weapons of mass destruction concept that lead to a long a bloody war. I'm sure you also saw along the bottom of the map the term "Here there be dragons" suggesting that the CIA stills subscribes to the flat earth theory.

Like you, I was only a little concerned when I saw that my 'home and native land', Canada, is shown on this map as home to Elk and hockey. They have completely overlooked our excellent beer which puts American watered down soap suds to shame.

You can also see that they have focused on the tequila of Central America, presumably as a warning to their CIA operatives to suspect and avoid tequila as a native home grown poison that would knock Americans right out of their socks (and underwear).

With this in mind, be of good cheer. Look once again at our dictionary definition of 'jaleo' and you will find it means: merrymaking with happy shouting and clapping as in Fiesta. Im sure they only meant to say if the children are as happy as at a party, then all is well in Indonesia.

I hope this is all a comfort to you.

Yours with a grain of salt and my tongue in my cheek,

Moe

Okay to clarify- I assume this is making fun of American perceptions of the world. I assume therefore that the "jaleo" connotes something negative that an American would thing of that region. I am trying to understand exactly what they think Americans think of Indonesia. Unfortunately, I think most Americans are fairly ignorant of the region, and don't even remember the Bali bombings. My best guess was that they were giving us credit for knowing enough to use that as a justification to call the place a disorganized confused mess (3. mess, confusion (lío)), but am not absolutely sure.

American as in people from South America, Central America???? - foxluv, Oct 8, 2010
Sorry, estadounidense- we fit the map so well we don't even have a unique word for our nationality (and why can't the term I just used not refer to Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos) - Stadt, Oct 8, 2010
Norteamericano is also not a terribly clear concept - Stadt, Oct 8, 2010
