I don't see much differnce exept for "¿que tal?" I would use to aknowlege a person passing by,someone I don't know. "¿Cómo te va? I would definetly Know the person when asking this. It's more customary to use "¿como te va? as an introduction to strike up a conversation with someone.

They are both very common greetings that basically mean, "What's up?", or "How's it going?".

if id want to greet someone im familiar with..in a formal manner like saying how are u doing, id say como te va? in an informal , like saying whats up? like when u talk to a buddy id say ...que onda?

que tal? and como te va? can be used to adress in a formal and polite manner to a friend or even someone u just met

Your response would be much easier to read if your keyboard contained a shif and the usual set of punctuation keys. - samdie, Oct 7, 2010
