I want to know what the difference between preterite and imperfect are and when you use them. Examples of the usage in english would help.

Hello, and welcome to the forum. You will find many helpful threads on this very topic if you do a search on the main 'Answers' page for 'preterite imperfect' or 'preterit imperfect'.
