How to say "they are"?

Hi I would like to know was is the correct way to say "they are" when describing people and places. How would one say with respect to a group of restaurants that "they are not very expensive" I would naturally say "son muy caro" using the verb "ser" or to say that that my parents are friendly i would say "son muy amable". Are these correct or should I be using "estan" from the verb "estar" or are both of theses incorrect. If anybody could help me out that would be great. Thanks!

Welcome to SpanishDict! Yes, I believe that son is correct in both cases, however if you wanted to say they are not very expensive it would be "No son muy caros." You left out the "no" in your sentence. There is a great article on ser vs. estar in the Reference section under the More tab.
