The word Cobrar

I recently heard this word in a song and i looked up the meaning in the dictionary and it didn't make sense. The way it was used in the song was, "La vida te esta cobrando." I asked a Spanish speaking friend about it and he said it meant something like life is getting back at you. Is this possib;e a slang usage for the word cobrar?

I would translate it as life is making you pay, which has the same meaning as what your friend said but translates cobrar in the usual way.

Actually these are two different meanings of the word "cobrar", though neither of them are slang of course. "Cobrar" can mean "to receive money as payment for a service", but it can mean to take something or cause damage to get back at someone. - bill1111, Oct 4, 2010
