Mystery sentence of the night: ...y se pira toda la peña.

Mystery sentence of the night: ...y se pira toda la peña.

Ok, I have just heard this in my favourite bar watching the match.

As a matter of fact, Madrid scored 6 goals! cool smile

Madrid 6 - Deportivo de la Coruña 1

So...as the fifth goal was scored the barman said:

Joeeee, mira, meten cinco goles y se pira toda la peña.

The challenge: Post the whole sentence in "real" Spanish;

And what did he mean?

Do not investigate on the web! I want to see what you thought or guessed not what you found outgrin

No natives...especially not those from Spainwink If a native has no idea, then guess too, jeje , I was often quite lost when Gekko said some of his sentences.

Heidita, just to help you the word is spelt 'mystery' with a 'y' not an i :) - FELIZ77, Oct 3, 2010
Oops, I jthought it would be easier to just correct it for her. - LateToDinner, Oct 3, 2010
Funny, Heidi! ¡Un puntazo de frase! - cogumela, Oct 3, 2010
I prefer to point out the mistake and let the person correct their own mistakes since I believe they remember better next time lol :) - FELIZ77, Oct 3, 2010
jeje, thanks lateto and feliz, cogu, a que mola? lol - 00494d19, Oct 3, 2010
¿Viste Alvite en el bar? Feliz77 what is spelt? I´ve never heard that word. - MattM, Oct 4, 2010
MattM, "spelt" is the past particple of "to spell". As always I'm glad I'm learning Spanish not English! - Jeremias, Oct 5, 2010
Although spelt is correct, most American English speakers would say or write spelled instead. Spelt is also a type of grain. - sagiia, Oct 7, 2010

Look, they've made five goals, and the whole crowd (all the fans) is clearing off (leaving)..

Edit: I forgot the "real" Spanish part. I suspect this changes a lot from place to place, as well.

Mira, meten cinco goles, y todos los aficionados salen.

not exact, but good try;) - 00494d19, Oct 3, 2010
The English or the Spanish? - KevinB, Oct 3, 2010
Actually, if the English is wrong they both would be, wouldn't they? - KevinB, Oct 3, 2010
hehe ... not exactly. Leaving is almost "salen", but very different to "se salen" - cogumela, Oct 3, 2010
Ah. I have a bad habit of doing that. - KevinB, Oct 3, 2010
Kevin, this was said by the barman inside the bar!! think...you are not that far off...and what is joeee?? - 00494d19, Oct 4, 2010

I think that the 'peña' can refer to a supporter's club and that your barman is viewing his customers as 'suporters' who are leaving his bar considering that the game is 'done and dusted. I have no idea of the significance of Joeee.

Joeee, mira meten cinco goles y salen todos mis clientes

Joeeee, look they put in 5 goals and all my customers leave.

  • My grasp of football is negligible so I guess I would never have assessed this correctly, but 'vale la pena'

One more time with Heidita's hints.....

Expletive, look, they score five goals and everyone bails.

As in bails-out (airplane), window of a burning house, etc.

Stadium or bar perhaps?

Joeeee, mira, meten cinco goles y se pira toda la peña.

Okay, I'm trying again based on the answer from Gekkosan, Kevin, and Lorenzo.

Ah, s----t, look, they get five goals and the whole bar clears out.

Just in case anyone wonders, "pirarse" is a word borrowed from the Gipsy dialect that was spoken in Spain, so it might not be in use in Latin America.
