Yes, there is a neutral gender, but not for nouns. They are either masculine or feminine.

Spanish nouns are either masculine or feminine. There is no neuter gender noun.

A better explanation:

Definition: A type of classification that is applied to nouns, pronouns and adjectives. The three genders in Spanish are masculine, feminine and neuter. Nearly all nouns can be classified as masculine or feminine; the only neuter nouns in Spanish are abstract nouns that are formed by preceding an adjective with lo. Many of the pronouns exist in masculine, feminine and neuter forms.

Example to Qfreed¨s explaination: "Lo malo de esta situación económica es que hay mucha gente sin trabajo." The bad thing about this economic situation is that there are many people without work.

"Malo" is normally an adjective but when it follows "Lo" it becomes a noun of neuter gender.

You learn something new every day. I would have said "no", and I would have been wrong. Well done.
