And can they be fixed

It is a bit annoying to have to go to their user profile and then click on the question. I am not sure I even know how they are doing it, much less (I assume) by accident.

Stadt, Just a quick caveat about uninstalling the Chrome browser: If you are using Microsoft Outlook, you may run into problems with outlook after uninstalling it. I will send you a PM with some links. - Rolest, Oct 1, 2010
If you edit this post so the first sentence contains quote marks (e.g., And can "they" be fixed), this post will become unclickable too! :-) - pesta, Oct 2, 2010
Won't know that without trying because that is not ''always'' the case! - LateToDinner, Oct 2, 2010

It isn't them, it's you. Actually, it is your browser. You are using Internet Explorer, IE, correct?

Open a new browser in Firefox (free from Mozilla) or Chrome (free from Google) and you will see what I mean.

It will also make a big difference in which pictures you get to see in the answers and celebration threads. Seeing a lot of .... alt text .... where there should be a picture?

Download one of those other browsers and try again.

It's primarily the server. See my post below. - pesta, Oct 2, 2010
Dare I ask ... which server? - LateToDinner, Oct 2, 2010
The application server that feeds the webserver at spanishdict.com - it's a computer term. - pesta, Oct 2, 2010

Okay, I figured it out. The problem is both the server, and the browser. When the first line of the post contains quote marks ", the question link's pop-up tip text gets defined using that first sentence of the post -- and the HTML expression being used to give the browser forms bad syntax. It puts quote marks inside a quote-mark delimited expression, but does it wrong. IE doesn't figure it out, but Firefox knows how to interpret it (most of the time).

Glad you see it Pesta, but it isn't as simple as quote marks being the problem ... happens without them, too. - LateToDinner, Oct 2, 2010
And tons of questions with quotes get through and function normal ... don't quit trying, it would be great to know what is up with those few that aren't linked! - LateToDinner, Oct 2, 2010
It's not quote marks in the answer title that causes the issue - it's the quotes in the message body first sentence. - pesta, Oct 2, 2010
Even quotes in the message body first sentence get through ...ojituero... for ex. Keep looking, you seem to be as curious about it as I am! - LateToDinner, Oct 2, 2010
The quotes may play a part ... but if has to be tied into something else. Thanks for looking. - LateToDinner, Oct 2, 2010
No, look at view source for the ojituero display - same syntax error. Then it's up to the browser to make sense of the nonsense. - pesta, Oct 2, 2010
It's 100% the server's fault for not "escaping" the text for the link's "title" attribute. - pesta, Oct 2, 2010
Depending on the browser it is written in AND the browser used to read it? I like that theory! Not sure how to check it, myself. - LateToDinner, Oct 2, 2010
You can "view source" the main answers page, search for the topic, examine the html, confirm the defect. Some browsers can still render the link, but they are not obligated to do so. - pesta, Oct 2, 2010
Pesta--You are a genius! - Rolest, Oct 2, 2010
It's my job :-) [ I mean, internet applications ;-) ] - pesta, Oct 2, 2010
Give me your boss’s name. I call him for you and tell him you should get a raise! - Rolest, Oct 2, 2010
I would be more grateful for a job offer! :-) - pesta, Oct 2, 2010

This thread is getting interesting with all the comments going on! And all technical! I love it! I think that Stadt, who started this thread, who only has 2 votes, deserves more Votes. I voted for him, and I think it would be a common courtesy, to him for starting such an interesting thread, if he got more than 2 votes! Let’s all give him a vote!

I was wondering where he got that second vote! :) - LateToDinner, Oct 2, 2010
Linked a new thread to it, he should do okay ... votes, views and badges! Good observations, Ron. - LateToDinner, Oct 2, 2010
Thank You. - Rolest, Oct 2, 2010
And thank Pesta, too. - LateToDinner, Oct 3, 2010
I agree. I already more than thanked him (see his comments) - Rolest, Oct 3, 2010

I am using Internet Explorer in Window 7, with automatic updates, occaisonally I look at the optional updates- maybe last a week or two or ago and I did not see a new version so I assume I have whichever is most up-to-date.

Should be spelled "occasionally" - pesta, Oct 2, 2010
Thankfully, with firefox, my inability to spell English should now only show up in the comments section - Stadt, Oct 2, 2010
And there is a trick for that, too! Type your comment in the answer box and then paste it! - LateToDinner, Oct 2, 2010

Okay, I installed Firefox. I just opened both Internet Explorer and Firefox at the same time. All links were valid on the first five pages anyway, but on page 6, 3 of the questions were in black and unlinked in Internet Explorer- they were all valid in Firefox. I just wanted to give feedback that this solution worked, and can be tried by anyone else having the same problem. It also seems to have added a spellchecker to this answer box- it has underlined in red all my typos (fixed) and anything I try to type in Spanish. I therefore assume it is from Firefox and not this site.

Thank you for the feedback. I forgot the spellcheck bonus but you are right, it doesn't speak Spanish! - LateToDinner, Oct 2, 2010
Firefox is a workaround. The server delivers bad html. Firefox manages to understand the bad code. See my post below. - pesta, Oct 2, 2010

Hi Stadt

Yes - try Chrome - it is faster - BUT - it gives me problems when using the "Translation" feature - it can't decide which language to use.

Yeah, sorry. That is the problem. I use IE for most of my work aps. If I try to sneak a peek at SD, it takes no time at all to realize I used the wrong browser. Grab one of those free downloads.

You can have windows open in multiple browsers, so it doesn't mean you have to give up the IE, it is just more SD friendly in the other browsers.

Hello Stadt:

I have to disagree with the other answers. I make my living with computers and have been programming since they used COBOL and BASIC. I am assuming that you are talking about when someone asks a question, but you can’t click on it. There is no hyperlink. I am not sure why this sometimes happens. It would seem to me that it has nothing to do with a browser. More than likely it has to do with the server. The hypertext creation programming originates on the server, not on the client end. If a hyperlink does not work, it has to be a problem on the server end, not the browser.

Sorry Ron, but it is the browser! - LateToDinner, Oct 1, 2010
Before I learned Cobol, I used Fortran. And with both of our combined experiences we are not going to get around the fact that IE and SD have compatibilty problems. - LateToDinner, Oct 1, 2010
This is a bit beyond me, but tommorrow I will try Google Chrome and report back (I have to be at work at 6 am) - Stadt, Oct 1, 2010
It may be true that SD and IE could indeed have incompatibility problems, however, if the question was about answering a question, and pressing the answer button, that code resides on the server. - Rolest, Oct 1, 2010
Ron, open SD in IE. Scroll down the list of questions and you will see some that you can not access directly, only by first linking to the profile page and then linking. Only in IE, and only sometimes. - LateToDinner, Oct 2, 2010
Cobol - Fortran - Basic - (modern inventions) ! How about Machine Code - or am I the only one left? - ian-hill, Oct 2, 2010
Had to study, but was never employed to use it! You remember my buddy, Herman Hollerith? - LateToDinner, Oct 2, 2010
I coded some assembler, then every language since :-) - pesta, Oct 2, 2010
Hollerith - inventor of the punch-card - B O Y do I remember those ! - ian-hill, Oct 2, 2010
Hollerith, assembler, machine, basic, Fortran, Basic, punch cards, Cobol, browsers, how about ASIC languages? - Rolest, Oct 2, 2010

In the list of questions under the answers tab, about 5-10 percent of the question titles are not linked. Instead they are in smaller type in black with quotes - Stadt, Oct 1, 2010
