Movie set in (1900s)...

I've had a discussion with my boyfriend about how to say a movie was "set in the (for example) 1900s" and he didn't seem to know what I was talking about. I looked it up with the translation feature here and also on Word Reference and I couldn't find anything satisfactory. So, how would I say "The movie was set in the 1900s" or "The movie takes place in the 1900s" in Spanish? My guess was "La pelicula es puesta en los 1900s" (The movie is set in the 1900s), but my BF didn't seem to "approve" of that one. :p

One way to say it is: La película se realiza en los 1900s (mil novecientos)
