How do you spell "barbacoa" in English?

In the lesson I am studying right now (2.3) the English translation for the Spanish word "barbacoa" is given as "barbeque". I think this is wrong, unless you want to pronounce is as e"barbeck". The correct spelling is "barbecue", but, alas, everywhere in the world the incorrect spelling is winning the battle. Origin of the misspelled word is of course the American BarBQ.

The word barbecue, interestingly, comes from Spanish barbacoa, which borrowed the word from the indigenous habitants of Haiti. For some reason, most Spanish native speakers are convinced that word is originally from English.

According to Wikipedia:

"While the standard modern English spelling of the word is barbecue, local variations like barbeque and truncations such as bar-b-q or bbq may also be found."

Hope this helps.

Well, we couldn't call it BBC because the Brit's had already used that. - 0074b507, Sep 26, 2010

The Merriam-Webster English dictionary lists both barbecue and barbeque as correct, as well as listing BBQ as an accepted abbreviation.
