Welcome to Spanish Dict!
Street names are given differently in English than in Spanish. In English it would be 8th street, but in Spanish it would be Calle Ocho.
In Colombia, I lived near 7th Avenue. We always referred to it as "La Avenida Septima", or (since it's a major street in Bogotá) simple "La Septima." I asked the taxi drivers to take me to "Calle Sesenta y nueve con la Septima".
Sorry, I'm not sure of the correct capitalizations, especially with numbers in street names.
In Ecuador it is definitely Avenida Octava (the street signs say 8va). . .my address is Avenida Segunda y Calle Segunda Sur.
In Guatemala we say: Octava avenida (8a av.) or Quinta calle (5a.calle). If called by name we say: Avenida Bolivar, Calle del Reformador...etc.
Just a small side note to point out that in the UK we rarely express our streets as ordinal numbers as occurs in the US. I know of very few examples . House numbers are in the cardinal form as they are in Spain. A small difference is the order in which the address line is written.
- In England my address would have been 13 Oregano Street.....(for example)
- In Spain I would write it as Calle Oregano 13 or more commonly C/Oregano 13
There will, of course, be exceptions to this in various places but this is a reasonable assessment I believe.
We translate ordinal numbers as nominal ones if we talk about a street. If I were to translate "21st st", I'd say "calle veintiuno". However, if we were talking about an avenue, like 5th Avenue in Manhattan, I'd definitely translate that as "quinta avenida"
