"Hablar claro" is perfectly fine to translate "speak freely" -although it can be used to say "speak clearly" as well- as is "hablar abiertamente" or "hablar con franqueza".

"Hablar libremente" has a different connotation though. It can be used as "speak freely", but more often it is used to express that you can speak your mind without worrying for your personal safety or being imprisoned.

I think libremente is a better word than claro here.

The use of "claro" would confuse me. I might think you're asking if you were able to speak "clearly" rather than "freely."

You'd have to wait for a native speaker or someone with more experience to tell you if this is used often, but I'd say:

¿Puedo hablar abiertamente? (frankly, openly, fairly, plainly)

I would agree with fatcho that it would be better to say

"¿Puedo hablar Español libremente?

o ¿Puedo hablar Español con libertad?

The expression to speak with complete liberty is:

Hablar con toda or plena libertad (Frankness =libertad))

I hope this helps You grin
