Welcome to the forum. In Spanish the participle (participio) can act like an adjective.

Estar + participio = To be + description

This example came up today:

To sit = sentar. Participio = sentado. Estoy sentado = I am seated (I am sitting down)

Another example:

To tire (out) = cansar. Participio = cansado. Están cansados = The are tired.

As an adjective the participio has to follow the rules of matching the gender and number, just like any other adjective.

Estar + participio pasado Many people call Estar+gerundio as Estar+present participle which is a totally different subject. - 0074b507, Sep 22, 2010
Good point. - KevinB, Sep 23, 2010
