The word erguir

Question

I came across this word the other day. It is an irregular verb and for example there are two ways to conjugate the present tense.

yergo,irgo
yergues,irgues
yergue,irgue

erguimos
erguís
yerguen,irguen

I'm wondering if anyone could tell me the reason for this. Is one more archaic than the other or is one more common?

The forms with "y" are by far the most common ones. "Irgo" and the rest are very rare forms with an unusual irregular pattern (the "y" one follows the most predictable irregular pattern.)

present indicative; I wouldn't use Yerger...is a very old...way...but pretty on poetry....
