Which form of " I ask" is more widely used? Is there any difference in the meaning?

Preguntar generally means to ask a question. Pedir is more like asking someone to give you something.
El maestro me preguntó cómo me llamo. - The teacher asked me my name.
Los huelguistas piden más dinero. - The strikers are asking for more money.

Pedir is generally used as in asking for something, ie ordering something in a restaurant, requesting someones hand in marriage, begging for money, etc.
Preguntar is generally asking a question as in asking something of someone.
