Haber with plurals Help please

Haber with plurals Help please

I'm not sure about using haber with plurals instead of singular. For instance saying: habrá un agua lucha (is this the right word for water fight?) or habrán deportes como voleibol o frisbee. Is the grammar right in these sentences or can someone help me correct them...?

If someone could help proofread this paper... I've been checking for a couple days and am trying to not have any grammatical errors.

Thanks for any help!!

The word "julio" is not capitalised in Spanish. - lazarus1907, Sep 20, 2010

Welcome to the forum! You have written a wonderful essay and almost everything in it is very clear. Good job!

Just as "hay" is used with both singular and plural in the present tense ("hay una chica en la casa" or "hay dos chicas en la casa"), "habrá" is used for both singular and plural in the future. "Habrá una lucha de agua" and "habrá muchas actividades".

Remember that forms of "ser" are used when talking about events being held or taking place.

Am I correct that people will be invited by calling them on the phone and by sending a written invitation? If that is the case, you do not want "para" in that sentence. "Por" means "by means of" or "by way of". Thus, "los invitaremos por llamarlos..."

One more thing: "gustar" doesn't use "se" unless you are talking about "they like each other" - "se gustan". "They like to joke" needs to be "les gusta bromear"

Being a retired teacher, I am hesitant to correct every error, not out of being mean, but because I am confident you can do a little more correcting. One thing to do is to check to be sure that all your genders and numbers (singular or plural) match up correctly.

I am not sure if you have had the "passive se", but "the food will be served" required some sort of passive construction. Once again, i don't want to just give you one because I believe you should use whatever passive structure your teacher has taught you.

Why don't you make these few corrections, check for gender and number, and then make adjustments in your post?

Thanks for the help! I checked through the paper again and fixed(?) some things towards the end and your suggestions. - Yetahima, Sep 19, 2010

It helps me to think of the special case of haber (where it is used to mean something like our "there is / are") in the following way. I pretend there is this Mystical It that has everything.

Hay una fiesta => It has a party => There is a party

Hubo unas manzanas => It had some apples => There were some apples

Habrá muchos juguetes => It will have many toys => There will be many toys

(To me, our own there is/are is like the Mystical Place where everything is.)

I've always said and heard it as "habrá deportes" or "habrá conciertos", never in plural. And no, "water fight" isn't translated as "lucha (de) agua", I don't even know what we would call that, "peleas con agua"?

As for the text, I propose some more changes in verbs, grammar and expressions to make the whole thing more idiomatic:

I understood what you meant here).

No quiero frustrarme o aburrirme, sino pasarlo muy bien (I'm a bit doubtful about this one, I'm not sure what you meant with that).

Thanks for the help; it flows a lot better. In the first part the meaning is nothing will be inside the home because everything will be out in the shade. The second part is I don't want anyone to be frustrated or bored but instead to have a good time. - Yetahima, Sep 20, 2010
Ok, then the first sentence would have to include "fuera", like "porque se va a hacer todo fuera, a la sombra". The second one I'd change it to "no quiero que nadie se frustre o se aburra, sino que todo el mundo lo pase bien". - bill1111, Sep 21, 2010

Ellos se llevan bien y apenas argumentan ("argumentar" means "to give arguments" most of the time).

No quiero ser frustrada o aburrida pero en cambio será entusiasmada (I don't want to be a frustrated or boring woman, but instead he/she will be a delighted person??? I rather read this en English before giving advice).

Los invitaremos por llamarlos...I think he intends "We'll invite them by calling them and by sending them each a notice about the reunion" (or something like that). - webdunce, Sep 20, 2010
