Can you use either tomar or pedir preceding prestado, both meaning to borrow? Thanks all.

To me 'pedir prestado' is to ask to borrow but the 'tomar prestado' would just be 'to borrow' but I'm not 100%.....

Le pedí prestado este libro a mi amigo Luis (I asked then I borrowed it from him).

Mi amigo Juan me prestó su carro mientras arreglaban el mío (He loaned it to me).

Tomé prestado este libro de mi amigo Luis (I borrowed it, and I may not have asked).

They are both correct. I am not sure if there are any subtle differences I am unaware of.
