Esta es una transcripción de una mensaje de voz que recibí de mi amigo, te llamaba porque no te vi el domingo en la iglesia y quería saber si todo está bien. Que Dios te bendiga y cuidate mucho. He oído el verbo llamar en el perfecto y imperfecto** cuando alguien dice "I called you" (en inglés). No sé lo que es correcto especialmente cuando oigo 'nativos' utiliza el verbo diferentemente.
Voy a preguntar a mi amigo, pero mientras tanto, puede ayudarme entender algo. En este contexto, ¿por qué utilizar el pasado imperfecto en lugar de la perfecto? ya que él me llamó en el pasado perfecto, en otro palabras se inició y terminó en el pasado. ¿Por qué no se puede usar llamé en lugar de llamaba?

Very difficult to explain this, but "te llamaba" sounds better in this case. In my oppinion (and I'm sorry for my English)...
Te llamé se usaría si la llamada hubiese tenido respuesta, o si realizó ayer, o antes.
Would be used if the call had been answered, also if you made it yesterday, or earlier.
Te llamaba tiene un matiz distinto, ya que la intención era hablar contigo pero no fue posible, por eso la acción está incompleta. Indica intención, y es más apropiado para remarcar que hace sólo un rato que la acción fue realizada.
Has a different hue, because the intention was talking to you but it was not possible, so the action is incomplete. It indicates purpose, and is more appropriate to emphasize that only a while ago the action was performing.
Te estaba llamando indica el momento exacto en el cual uno está al teléfono esperando respuesta.
Indicates the exact moment in which one is on the phone awaiting an answer.
Te estuve llamando implica que la acción se repitió varias veces en el pasado.
Implies that the action was repeated several times in the past.

I also agree with Kevin that this sounds just fine ..."I was calling you because..." (Te llamaba porque...).
Edit As Heidi says, he would not have chosen the preterit (Te llamé porque...).unless there was a specific time frame involved.

Te llamé would imply an action somewhere more in the past...te llamé ayer por que....
Te llamaba, here this form is used, instead of "te llamo (te estoy llamando)".
Aunque esto es un problema sencillo, siempre he usado el pretérito en esta situación, pero cuando escuché esto me sorprendió. Ahora sé que puedo usar ambos, dependiendo de la situación. Muchísimas gracias!
