Words such as these are called cognates, and are defined as, "words that are similar in two or more languages as a result of common descent." The more closely related two languages are, the more cognates they may have.

Some examples in Spanish are: abandon (abandonar), abnormal (abnormal), accent (acento), band (banda), bar (barra), bicycle (bicicleta), camel (camello), cape (capa), contact (contacto), dialect (dialecto), echo (eco), elegant (elegante), etc.

There are of course a great deal more, though not all are as similar as those above. The most complete list I could find is located [here] (http://www.latinamericalinks.com/spanish_cognates.htm).

Hope that helps!

Your link provides only a sample. I used to have a list (I lost it) with over 20,000 cognates. - lazarus1907, Sep 15, 2010

Many thousands of words, especially technical ones (Biology, Medicine, Physics, Philosophy,...) However, "hospital" does not sound that close: in Spanish the accent is on a different syllable, we don't pronounce the initial H, and the O, and the A are pronounced differently, and the P, the I and the T are not quite the same either. In other words, every single sound is either slightly different or quite different (although not completely different), but there is no exact sound match.
