In Spanish when the time is more than 30 minutes past the hour you usually say how long it is until the next hour.

12:45 means 15 minutes before 1, or faltan quince (minutos) para la una.
1:45 means 15 minutes before 2, or faltan quince (minutos) para las dos.

. We usually use menos after half an hour . In my Spanish class this is what the teacher said. Any time after 30 minutes you say how long till the next minute.

12:45 would be 15 minutes before one or es la una menos cuarto..

!:45 would be 15 minutes before 2 or son las dos menos cuarto.

I hope this is right because there is a test thursday.!

Faltar must be another way of saying it lacks link text

Faltar is the verb meaning to lack/ to be missing .. so it is just another way to say a quarter to one (12.45)

Likewise, with the second sentence it is just saying you lack 15 minutes to complete the hour ...to make 2 o' clock in this example

It is not the form I learnt to use to speak the time in Spanish and nearly all my teachers were native speakers

I learnt to say - as perhaps you did too -

Son las dos menos cuarto = It is a quarter to two

Some people also say: Es la una y cuarenta y cinco (minutos)

but I was taught to only use 'y' (= and) with up to 30 minutes past the hour and then to say how long it is until the next hour that is: the hour minus the minutes:

¿Qué hora es? = What time is it ?

(Son las) siete menos veinte = (it is ) twenty minutes to seven

I hope this helps grin
