i guess i want to learn more of their dialect to help relate and be understood by my friends there and to learn the different style spanish has taken over the years and cultures

Unsurprisingly, the "Dominican" dialect of Spanish. All this really means is "standard" Spanish (with some differences in pronunciations that are specific to the the country, some that are fairly widespread in the Caribbean, some that are fairly widespread in Latin America) and various regional terms/localisms (specific words used there).

Someone from there (with a good ear) could possibly distinguish further dialectal sub-regions within the country but it would all be Spanish.
