you use ser when you have something eternal.

Like for example, La casa es grande(The house is big.) The house will forever be big and it will never shrink.

On the other hand, estar are things that change for example,

Estoy cansada (which means you are tired at the moment), but won't always be tired.

Correct Spanish uses ser this way: "Obama es Presidente." Please tell me this isn't forever! the temporary/permanent "rule" isn't a very good rule. - Goyo, Sep 13, 2010

hi! SER is the verb to be. So you can say I am, you are, he is, etc. SER is the infinitive of the verb. So in Spanish you say: Ser bueno (be good), yo soy alto (I'm tall), Ella es linda (she is nice. I hope it can help you
