Cenar or Cena?

I am a native speaker but my husband is not. He asked this question of me but I did not know how to answer:
I said 'es la hora de cenar' and he wondered why not say 'es la hora de la cena.' Which one is correct and why?

Some things just are. You could say it either way, but a native speaker would say what they have heard other people say so it's just the way it is.

Es hora de cenar, es la hora de la cena..vamos a cenar, la cena está en la mesa.
Yo diría que cuaquiera sirve.
