Unusual use of word "picado"

I am coming across the word "picado" in a document I am reading, as in "hacer el picado". It is in the context of land measurement and resistance by villagers to landowners. Any ideas what this word could mean in this context?

This references cites ground as 'picado'. Not sure if that's any help.

[Picado][1]

Also in Costa Rica picado means chopped so that might have some connection?
