There's a Barcelona newspaper called El Periódico (original, eh?) that publishes in Spanish and Catalan. If you can read Spanish fairly well you can read most of the Catalan. I have no idea how it's pronounced.

Fascinating isn't it? Portuguese and (to a lesser extent) Italian and even French are other languages that I can now "understand". I wish English had "sister" languages but our closest cousins - probably Dutch or German - are utterly alien to me. Food for thought ........

Written Porguguese isn't too bad. Spoken Brazilian Portuguese is even easier. Spoken Peninsular Portuguese is quite different. - KevinB, Sep 12, 2010
