Hi everybody , lately I was looking on this thread ( How much time it can take to learn Spanish fluently? ) and one of the members said

.

..... I don't mean 2 hrs a day either. I mean like, 4, 5, and sometimes more hours of hard practice.

4 , 5 hrs per day !!!!big surprise I don't study the basic subjects at school ( Arabic , Math , etc ) even for one hour per day .grrr

.

So I wanted to know what about you ? , How many hours do you study Spanish per day or per week ?wink

I believe the easier question, for me at least, is when do I not try to study, speak, listen, or do anything not in Spanish. smile I try to pull in something in all my conversations (with my kids or friends) even if it is a simple sentence. I read stories in Spanish as much as possible. For example, right now I am reading "Los Amigos Del Hombre" by Celso Román. I also started another one of C.S. Lewis's books called "El Sobrino Del Mago". I need more!! Hope this answers your question, for me at least!! wink

El sobrino del mago" - is that "The Screwtape Letters"? - mountaingirl123, Sep 10, 2010
I just saw "The Screwtape Letters" on Broadway (NYC) and found it difficult to understand the English at times. ":) - Nicole-B, Sep 11, 2010

I have to agree with Jason here. Every day, I try to weave Spanish into most of what I do. I try to spend at least one to two hours of concentrated study. This includes reading grammar books and watching videos. I have reviewed the videos on this site many times throughout the past year. I also enjoy lacasarojas.com.

In addition to focused study, I also do a variety of things like watch Spanish T.V., listen to Spanish music, read books translated into Spanish, etc.

My favorite thing to do is to find anyone who is fluent and practice with them. I had an opportunity today to have lunch with a Chilean woman who I have become friends with. She is 87 years old, but we have a great time learning from each other. I don't count this as "study" time. However, I probably learn more speaking to my Spanish speaking friends than I do just reading books or watching videos.

Basically, it has become a lifestyle....that I love!! smile

It really has been a helpful site for me. It is especially helpful for improving my "listening" skills. - Nicole-B, Sep 11, 2010

I do 2 shows a day, pausing and taking notes. Usually takes 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Browse on here for about an hour, upload my notes to my ipod and take them to work, and study for about an hour with them at work, and talk to the natives there for about 30 minutes. Plus listen to music on and off. I guess 2 - 5 hours a day. Even if Spanish is just on in the background that stills counts as studying because you are training your ear, on the other hand, browsing this forum and playing games etc... as fun as they can be, does not count as studying for the most part. I know some people don't study that much, but I feel ashamed when I talk to my mom and she just is fluent and I can't hold up to her. But tomorrow my tutor works with me so I will be able to talk all day and bring my notes. Right now I am watching Lost in Spanish as I type this. ¿Donde estoy? ¿Donde estoy? ¿Vienen por nosotros? wink

Hola,

I spend more time learning Spanish when I have a study buddy. My sister is taking a conversational Spanish course at the local college and so I do practice with her. We speak Spanish and she tells me what I am pronouncing incorrectly, which is almost every word! I am not close to being ready to actually speak on Skype or in a group of accomplished speakers. I can however read and understand a lot more written Spanish than my study buddy can.

Me and the \\\\ (I mean my sister not the frog...lol)

For me, the amount of focused study I do every day varies enormously. I do think it's more productive to do a set amount of study each day, though for most people breaking it up into 30-45 minute sessions helps in retaining what you study.

My problem is fitting it all in with work, volunteer, and personal commitments. Last summer, when I first joined Spanishdict.com, I had a pretty light work schedule and even a couple of weeks of vacation time. Now my work load has picked up again and time off is much less.

So, bottom line, I study about 45 minutes a day, with another 30 minutes or so browsing around this site. I, too, try to integrate Spanish with my daily activities, especially trying to stop every now and then and at least mentally describe to myself what I'm doing in Spanish.

I don't really think of it as studying. I did that when I took 4 years of it in high school. I lived in Venezuela for 2 of those years, so that was more learning than studying.

Nowadays I'm trying to shake the rust off and rebuild my vocabulary. I listen to BBC Mundo and the Spanish language version of Democracy Now! podcasts when I'm driving. I read Spanish language newspapers on the Internet at work when I'm waiting for code to compile or download. I watch Spanish language TV at home a bit. Plus I hang around here. It all adds up to a couple of hours a day, probably.

But, again, most of it I don't count as study, though I do do flashcards for words I have to look up. I don't count watching TV, reading the newspaper or listening to news in English as studying English, so it's the same in Spanish, though it probably is the next best thing to talking to someone for learning.

Varies. I once did 4 hours woth of Pimsleur - a very draining task.

The next i did 0

These days i only listen to Caden Dial (solo el mejor de neustra Musica) so if listeing to Spanish Music counts then my average is brought way up.

I listen to 1 Michel Thomas recording every 2 days

I dont really study Spanish other than Michel Thomas. I know the grammar rules. I just try to read and write. Do about half an hour a day of this so no much.

I don't add it up, but it's a lot. I don't even watch T.V., but it looks like I might be able to find some good Spanish television, if I could understand it. I just started a course at Community College that should keep me busy, even though it's Spanish one, I think that I need it.

I spend about an hour every evening on doing flashcards on Spanishdict, from other members, and some that I create myself to remember words.

I also watch a couple of videos on Lo Mas TV every night, which maybe takes 20~30 minutes.

During the day at work, if I have idle time or something, I try to translate different phrases that I may hear in meetings, and jot them down on paper, just for practice.

Overall, maybe about 2 hours a day I spend practicing Spanish, more or less, and I just enjoy learning.

It's different when you're in school, you have to study a whole variety of things you don't even like. That's very draining. I just have to study 1 thing and I enjoy it.

I guess it's about 10 or so hours a day at the moment 'cause I'm not working. Once I start work it'll have to drop to about 1 (except on weekends). I'm at it all day, but I get distracted by stuff a lot too.

Today I watched an episode of Buenos Entonces twice, finished a chapter from Spanish in 3 months, did a chapter from Living Language, and I'm doing a lesson on the BBC website now. I took an online level test today and got to A2 hurrrrrrrrah I'm not a beginner any more! I'm elementary! :D

I have heard that you can sleep with the Spanish book under your pillow and learn by osmosis. It would certainly cut down on time spent studying. Do you think it would work? LOL wink
