Using Direct and Indirect pronouns: Commands (translate and transform)

Everybody welcome, all levels! No peeking on other answerswink

This was a real challenge last Saturday chat, and Quentin, did I hear you say there was no grammar on my chats? wink

Well, the challenge was a real killer, as I think nobody made no mistakes, jeje.

I had to prepare the sentences so as I got them written down, this will be much easier for you than for those who participated, as on the chat this is oral, tricky, trust mewink

And I risked getting arrested and allraspberry My neighbour thought it was too noisy, jeje, and threatened to call the cops...I told him to go right ahead, on a Saturday night at only 12.30 call the cops in Spainbig surprise ...I think they don¡t even bother to write down the address!! LOL Spain is a noisy place and on a Saturday...almost anything goeswink

Ok, so the idea is:

a) Translate the given sentences.

b) Transform the sentences using pronouns.

Example:

Bring my mum the book.

Llévale el libro a mi madre.

Llévaselo.

Did I say the chat was a real killer? wink

Please follow the rules correctly, no corrections will be made to those answers which don't follow the rules.wink

Trust me, this happens all the timeraspberry

Here are the 5 sentences, I will create a new thread with 5 more later on.

1) Don't drink that beer!

2) Do your homework!

3) Tell his friend the secret!

4) Go and buy her brother a book!

5) Don't write their sister a letter!

No, you did not hear me say that (unless you were reading my mind) because I have never been to one of your chats. I have no idea what you discuss, but I do know that grammar isn't your favorite topic. - 0074b507, Sep 10, 2010
(and that is why you do not hear me at your chats) :-) - 0074b507, Sep 10, 2010
hear, as in hear somebody say that, quentin, and I know you did say that you did not come to the chats as you actually only liked grammar, so that was what I wanted to say. And I guess you already know that anyway,) - 00494d19, Sep 10, 2010
and, as a matter of fact, the last three chats were precisely on grammar, pronouns, tenses, commands etc. - 00494d19, Sep 10, 2010
and, you are not coming to the chats, let's face it, because you don't dare to come;) - 00494d19, Sep 10, 2010
Ouch. What kind of material was that glove made of that you slapped me across the face made with? - 0074b507, Sep 10, 2010
now, now children lol :) - Kiwi-Girl, Sep 10, 2010
Believe me, the last few chats were killer grammar chats! - sanlee, Sep 10, 2010
jeje, good one maria claire, and yes, sandy, so they were, thanks;) - 00494d19, Sep 10, 2010
Yes, excuse me. You throw down a gauntlet. Slapping one with a glove to challenge them to a duel was a later tradition. - 0074b507, Sep 11, 2010

Why the accent on cuénta? In #1 is the pronominal meaning there similar to comerse? (completeness) - 0074b507, Sep 10, 2010
cuenta has no accent - 00494d19, Sep 10, 2010
in #4 you have an i.o.p with the d.o.p., but in the longer form there is no i.o.p. (para su hermano). Is it correct to use an i.o.p. for it in the short form, but not have a redundant one for it in the long form? - 0074b507, Sep 10, 2010
#5 Why no redundant i.o.p. in the long form? - 0074b507, Sep 10, 2010

Hint: The negative tú command forms use the tú form of the present subjunctive. 1) looks good, 5) should be the same as 1) Don't you drink that beer! Don't you write that letter. Hope your doing well Jason. - MattM, Sep 13, 2010

Would someone clue me in as to why command sentences do not require the redundant i.o.p. when there is an indirect object in the sentence?

The redundant pronoun is not mandatory, even though as usual, that depends. It has nothing to do whether the sentence is a command or not.

Look at this:

a) En el caso del complemento indirecto, la coaparición del pronombre átono es normalmente opcional y suele ser lo más frecuente, especialmente en la lengua oral: No (les) da importancia a los problemas; (Les) he contado nuestro secreto a unos amigos; (Le) han denegado la beca a Juan; (Le) he dicho la verdad a mi madre.

Command forms are tricky. They differ depending on whether they are formal (Ud,Uds) or informal (tú, vosotros). The pronoun position and verb tense also change depending on whether the command is affirmative or negative. I assumed informal based on the last exercise. Anyway, here is a concise and comprehensible link that helped me out.

In the last exercise with D.O.'s and I.O.'s, I put a redundant I.O.P. in the first translation and they were removed with the corrections, but I still got a smiley face. - Leeh

Hi, leeh, this might have two reasons, I hit the wrong key, raspberry, or it was optional but sounded better without.

There were also sentence with para....some grammarians consider the para mí, para mi hermano an indirect object, but others don't.

It sounds completely off to say:

Le compro una capa para mi hermano.

The redundant indirect pronoun is in my opinion not asked for , as this is not an indirect object. It all depends on the sentence.

I give up.

Would someone clue me in as to why command sentences do not require the redundant i.o.p. when there is an indirect object in the sentence?

Dile ...a su amigo.

Ve a comprarle...a su hermano.

No le escribas...a su hermana.

since no one is using it I assume there must be a reason.

Qfreed, I agree with you that the reference section on the I.O.P. says that the redundant I.O.P. is allways needed when an I.O. is in the sentence. - Leeh, Sep 11, 2010
gfreed, would you mind clueing everyone in as to what redundant indirect object pronouns are and how to use them? Muchas gracias por ayudarnos. - 001a2987, Sep 11, 2010

Chruhlman, there is a good explanation in the ref section under indirect object pronouns with examples right underneath. All examples have the redundant I,O,P, - Leeh, Sep 11, 2010
I am confused also. - Leeh, Sep 11, 2010
Check out KeveB's answer to the Question " me gusta los mujeres o me gustan los mujers". He gives a good explanation and it matches the ref section. - Leeh, Sep 11, 2010
